"Chattering" refers to (usually unintentional) vibration of a cutting tool while machining a metal job. This leaves a pattern of gouge marks on the metal.

Thanks for that. I did gather this when I heard it as it is a very descriptive term, but in my googling I saw no application of "chattered" as an adjective.
